Book review: A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A Young Adult book, a great mixture of science fiction, adventure and romance.

Marguerite is the daughter of two scientists who just invented the firebird, a minuscule and high tech necklace which allows the owner to jump into multiple universes and that could of course cause extreme results for the future. When Marguerite’s father is murdered, their assistant Paul escaped to another universe. Marguerite came to conclusion that Paul has murdered her father and she wanted to take revenge and kill him. Therefore, she and her friend Theo leapt into the same universe as Paul but not everything went as planned.

A Thousand Pieces of You is the first book of the Firebird Series. I read it for the first time when I was still in high school. I remember picking one of the library books after a normal schoolday. I had so many homework to do but I procrastinated it and read A Thousand Pieces of You in one turn. The procrastinating was definitely worth it. This addictive book became one of my favourites. Finally, I bought the book with the excuse that I had to read it for school and that it was not available in the library at that moment. One of my better excuses for buying books!

The reason why I gave A Thousand Pieces of You all the stars in my rating is simply because this story contains all aspects which make a the plot of the book great. Claudia Gray gives attention to the personal experiences and emotions of the protagonist which makes it for the readers way more easy to identify with Marguerite. Furthermore, Marguerite’s perception of the world is different from others because she look to the world as an artist. Colour shemes, contrasts and texture are highly present in Marguerite’s perception of the world. Though Marguerite was the only artist in her scientific minded family, she stands out as a confident person. Besides the feelings of the main character, Claudia Gray mastered the transitions from chatty scenes to thrilling actions. Well elaborated characters, exciting adventure combined with groundbreaking scientific achievements make this story perfect!

The second (Ten Thousand Skies Above You) and the third book ( A Million Worlds with You) of the Firebird series are even more captivating. I guarantee that once you started A Thousand Pieces of You, you are going to finish the whole series.
